Roadrunners Internationale is saddened to announce the final flight of Pratt & Whitney engineer Tom Weigel.
Tom earned his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree at Vanderbilt University in 1959 and received a commission in the US Navy, where he served aboard the USS Ranger CVA-61 (1959-1962) as an engineer on Fresnel Lens Landing Systems, LOX systems, Engineering, Jet Engines, etc. Tom served in the US Navy Reserve - 1962-1966 and retired as Lt. USNR.
Following his service in the US Navy, Tom earned his master's degree in business administration at the Florida Atlantic University in 1971 while employed by Pratt & Whitney from 1962 to 1998 in the JT11-D20 (J58) engine group (1962-197l), primarily developing JP-7 fuel, PWA 524 lubricant and additives for each fluid (1962-1971)
Project Engineering Engine. Tom worked with the test group, misc. component groups (bearings, seals, hydraulics, external plumbing, fuel systems, etc.) 1962-1971) From 1972 to 1998, he worked on various code engine projects for the YF-12A & SR-71 Blackbirds, primarily on resident fuels, lubricants - grey beard consultant (1972-1998). JP7, JP8, PWA 524, Type II oils, etc.
During his career at Pratt & Whitney, Tom also worked on various other assignments, including the F-100 engine, engine Flight Test Group for F-15 (l972-1985), Engine Integration & Flight Test Group for F-16 (1974-1985)
F100 Engine Production & Co-Production Group (1977-1985), F100 - International Business Program Manager (l985-1998), and international engine programs for F15 (Israel, Japan) & F16 (Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Israel, Chile, Jordan, Greece).
Tom made Eagle Scout as a teenager and, after retirement, became a merit badge counselor.
Tom loved scuba diving in the Florida Keys and playing golf. While retired, he volunteered at the Owl's Head Transportation Museum in Rockland, Maine performing aircraft restoration, maintenance, and ground handling at air shows and demonstration events.
